San Cristóbal at a glance

San Cristóbal is one of the four inhabited islands of Galápagos. Its town, Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, is the port of the San Cristóbal ferry link, and the island's airport lies on the same island. You do not need the Itabaca Channel transfer that Santa Cruz visitors make from Baltra.

The island is most famous for Kicker Rock, a day trip by boat with snorkeling. Two other boat days go to Isla Lobos and to Española. Between trips you can see sea lions resting in town, and for wider planning, Galapagos day tours show what each island offers.

Getting to San Cristóbal

By air or by ferry from Santa Cruz.

By air

Flights from Quito and Guayaquil land at San Cristóbal airport (SCY) as well as at Baltra. Starting here saves the bus and channel crossing on Santa Cruz. Fares and schedules change, so compare dates before you buy.

How to get to Galápagos →

By ferry from Santa Cruz

The crossing takes roughly 2–3 hours. Fares run about $50 to $65 one way as of 2026, depending on the service. Buy at least two days ahead and be at the pier an hour before departure. There is no direct regular boat between San Cristóbal and Isabela, so you change at Puerto Ayora.

Kicker Rock (León Dormido)

Kicker Rock and León Dormido are two names for the same rock, a pair of tall rock towers off the coast. Operators sell it as a boat trip with snorkeling, and the same sailing can be part of a dive package. Do not count them as two different places.

A snorkeling day from Puerto Baquerizo Moreno costs about $169 and lasts 6–7 hours. A day dive at the same site costs about $234, also 6–7 hours. Requirements for divers differ by operator, so ask about certification and logged dives before you book. Water and wildlife conditions vary by day, and no operator can promise a specific animal.

You also need to follow the park rules at sea: a licensed naturalist guide, at least 2 m from animals when you swim, and no touching or feeding.

TripPrice exampleLengthWhat it is

Kicker Rock dive$2346–7 hoursDay dive, separate product
Isla Lobos$1384–5 hoursWalk and snorkel
Española$2598–9 hoursWalk and snorkel, full day

For most visitors with one boat day, Kicker Rock is the first choice. Pick Isla Lobos if you want a shorter, cheaper outing. Española is a long day and suits travelers who want to see albatrosses: the birds are mostly on land from about April to December, and mostly at sea early in the year. Not every sailing runs every day, so confirm the departure when you book.

In and around town

Sea lions rest on the waterfront and sometimes on the street in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. Keep your distance and walk around them. Frigatebirds also nest on San Cristóbal, along with other islands.

The interpretation center on the northern edge of town has exhibits on the island's nature and settlement history. Check hours and entry terms locally before you go. La Lobería is a coastal site with sea lions and marine iguanas. Treat it as a wildlife stop, not a swimming beach.

Heavy swell can close La Lobería, Tijeretas and Puerto Chino for a day or more. Ask at your hotel on the morning you plan to go.

San Cristóbal: frequently asked questions

Is Kicker Rock the same as León Dormido?

Yes. Both names refer to the same rock towers off San Cristóbal. Tour operators use either name for the same trip.

How much is a Kicker Rock tour?

A snorkeling day costs about $169 and a day dive about $234 as of 2026. Each lasts 6–7 hours, and prices differ between operators.

Can I fly straight to San Cristóbal?

Yes. Flights from the mainland serve both Baltra and San Cristóbal. The ferry between San Cristóbal and Santa Cruz is another way to link the two islands.

Can I go from San Cristóbal to Isabela directly?

There is no regular direct ferry. You change boats at Santa Cruz, so plan a full travel day and leave a buffer before any flight.

Can I swim with sea lions?

You may snorkel near them on a licensed tour, but you must stay at least 2 m away and never touch or chase them. Sea lions in town are wild animals, so walk around them.

Is this the official Galápagos site?

No. This is an independent travel guide. It is not run by the park directorate, the government or any tour operator, so confirm current rules and closures locally.
