How Galápagos cruises work
On a Galápagos cruise you sleep on a small boat and visit a set of islands on a fixed program. A bilingual national park guide leads the landings and snorkeling stops, and meals and island transfers are usually part of the fare. Programs run from 4 to 15 days, though not every route or class is offered every day.
Boats are sorted into four classes: Tourist, Tourist Superior, First Class and Luxury. These are trade terms, not official stars, and they are not applied the same way by every company. Compare the program and the stop list, not the class name alone. All prices here are US dollars and examples from 2026.

Boat classes and price examples
Example from-prices, as of 2026. The program lengths differ, so the rows are not directly comparable.
| Class | Example from-price | Program length |
|---|---|---|
| Tourist | From $1,222 | 4 days |
| Tourist Superior | From $4,200 | 8 days |
| First Class | From $3,620 | 4 days |
| Luxury | $3,580 to $4,490 | 4 days |
A from-price has no set departure date and does not show that a cabin is free. For most first-time visitors, a program of about a week gives time for more than one island group. Choose the class by budget, then compare the stops of each program. The rates below show how programs are priced by length.
Rate examples by program length
Example rates per person, as of 2026.
| Program | Rate per person |

| 5 days | $4,345 |
| 8 days | $6,745 |
Usually included
Meals, excursions, transfers between islands, a bilingual national park guide and expedition equipment.
Usually not included
Flights, the national park fee, the transit card, a fuel surcharge, tips and insurance. Budget $200 per adult for the park fee and $20 for the transit card on top of the fare.
Park fee →Single travelers and children
Many boats add about 50 percent for a single cabin and give around 20 percent off for children under 15 under set conditions. Each company sets its own rules.
Routes: read the stop list
Names such as north, south, east and west are rough guides.
Route names are not standard
North, south, east and west describe the area, and the letters A and B differ from one company to the next. One program, for example, includes stops at Isabela and Fernandina in the west and other island combinations on other routes. Check the actual stops.
A cruise reaches more than a land base
A land base gives you free days and your own schedule, but it does not reach every cruise destination. If you want the far islands, a boat is the way. If you want flexibility, use day tours.
Day tours →Diving needs its own program
The trips to Darwin and Wolf are dive safaris with overnight passages. Dive safaris typically ask for Advanced Open Water or equivalent, at least 50 logged dives, nitrox and current experience. Check the requirements of each boat.
Diving →Nights and days
A 7-day plan is not the same as 7 nights. Count the nights before you compare prices.
Last minute and booking timing
What to expect when you plan late.
Local agencies in Puerto Ayora sell cruise berths, and some travelers book there once they arrive. A saving, a fixed percentage or a departure is never guaranteed, and a fare does not show that a cabin is free. If you have a fixed date, book before you fly. If you are flexible, plan extra days in Puerto Ayora and compare programs on the spot.
Before you book, check the nights, the stops, what the fare includes and how to cancel. Terms differ by company and cannot be carried over.
Galápagos cruises: frequently asked questions
How much does a Galápagos cruise cost?
Examples from 2026 start at $1,222 for 4 days in the Tourist class. Another example is $2,845 for 4 days and $6,745 for 8 days per person. Flights, the park fee, the transit card, tips and insurance come on top.
How long should a cruise be?
Programs run from 4 to 15 days. For most first visits, about a week allows time for more than one island group. The right length depends on the route and your budget.
What do the boat classes mean?
Tourist, Tourist Superior, First Class and Luxury are trade terms rather than official stars. Companies apply them differently, so compare the program, the cabins and the stops.
Are the park fee and flights included?
Usually not. Flights, the $200 national park fee for adult foreign visitors and the $20 transit card are paid separately. A fuel surcharge, tips and insurance may also be extra.
Is it cheaper to book a cruise in Puerto Ayora?
Last-minute offers exist at local agencies, but neither a saving nor a departure is guaranteed. If a date matters to you, book in advance.
Is galapagos-islands.org a cruise line or an official site?
No. This is an independent travel guide. It is not the website of the Galápagos National Park Directorate, the Government of Ecuador or any cruise line, and it is not connected to any tour operator or hotel.
